In winter, the electric element only has to boost the temperature about 10° degrees from 45° to 55°. There is still a huge savings as without the solar system, the element would have to heat the water by about 40° (four times as much) from a 15° ambient temperature to 55°. Most thermostats are also set to 60°+ which means even more expense if there is no solar assistance.
We highly recommend that you have your plumber install a tempering valve which will mix cold water with the hot water from your geyser (if the water in the geyser is too hot, say 70°C) to prevent the water from causing injury to yourself, your children or your guests. The tempering valve can be set to the desired temperature for example 55° which ensures the water never comes out of your tap any hotter than that...this system will not reduce the solar system’s performance or savings as the temperature blending is done after the geyser when the water is on its way to your tap.
