The solar collector should be checked every year to make sure it is clear of debris such as leaves, dust and any other dirt that may impair its ability to absorb sunlight. This can be done by means of a hose or removing the debris by hand or with a soft cloth. Please note that high pressure washers or other strong cleaning agents are not recommended for use these may cause damage to the solar collector.
Please ensure that all safety requirements are adhered to when climbing onto a roof structure as serious injury can result from a fall.
Replacement of vacuum tubes must be carried out at all times with the appropriate safety gear including protective gloves and protective eyewear. Tubes are removed by simply unscrewing the black vacuum tube cap at the bottom of the collector, carefully removing the damaged vacuum tube by slowly turning and pulling downwards. Replace tubes by inserting them into the manifold with the silver mirror surface (near the bottom) facing downward toward the reflectors. Alternatively contact your installer or Green Power to arrange for an installer to do it for you.
Checking the vacuum every couple of years ensures that the vacuum has not been compromised. At the bottom on the inside of each vacuum tube is a barium coating. This is silver if the vacuum is intact and instantly turns white and clear if the vacuum has been compromised. The tube will continue to function if the vacuum is lost but will lose margin of efficiency.
